Morphological examination of blood smears is qualitative estimation of cells in the bloodsmears, i.e.,
determination of morphological features of cells in blood and blood-forming organs. The results obtained by the cytomorphologic examination of blood film in the smear are reliable, and can be used only when the examination is performed in perfectly made and colored blood smears.
Cells must be examined uniformly throughout the whole blood smear, moving the slide in a standard manner, i.e., in all directions, under the microscope.
In properly made blood smears, leukocytes are undamaged and regularly arranged: lymphocytes can be found predominantly in the central part, and granulocytes and monocytes on the edges of the blood smear.
