Erythrocytes are the most numerous blood cells (from 3.86 x 1012/L to 5.08 x 1012/L in women, and from 4.34 x 1012/L to 5.72 x 1012/L in men).
Erythrocytes count can be measured by a hemocytometer or an electronic cell counter.
The erythrocytes in a bloodsmear should be examined on the area with an optimum thickness. The slide should not be examined in the extremely thin edges or in the thicker area of the slide (pseudo-rouleaux formation). The proper area for examination is 10 mm away from the end of the thin edge. Erythrocytes just touch each other there and have a central pallor that blends gently into the surrounding hemoglobin of the cell.
