Large blood cell, round or oval in shape. It does not morphologically differ from the acidophilic megakaryocyte.
Size:
35-160 µm.
Cytoplasm:
Colorless or slightly reddish. It contains clusters of azurophilic granules that are future thrombocytes. A megakaryocyte gives between 2,000 and 7,000 thrombocytes.
Nucleus:
Irregular, small and concave, more often fragmented and pyknotic; chromatin is denser, sometimes pyknotic.
