THROMBOCYTOGENIC MEGAKARYOCYTE

Description:

Large blood cell, round or oval in shape. It does not morphologically differ from the acidophilic megakaryocyte.

Size:

35-160 µm.

Cytoplasm:

Colorless or slightly reddish. It contains clusters of azurophilic granules that are future thrombocytes. A megakaryocyte gives between 2,000 and 7,000 thrombocytes.

Nucleus:

Irregular, small and concave, more often fragmented and pyknotic; chromatin is denser, sometimes pyknotic.
