The second morphologically recognizable cell of thrombocytic lineage. The process of polyploidization is ended, and the cell has azurophilic granules. The cell is round or oval in shape, larger than the megakaryoblast.
Size:
20-80 µm.
Cytoplasm:
Moderately basophilic or polychromatophilic; there are a few fine azurophilic granules in the cytoplasm, usually arranged around the nucleus.
Nucleus:
Polyploid number of nucleoli, most often 2 - 4 small ones; chromatin is arranged in a coarse network or clusters.
