DISTURBANCES IN GRANULOCYTE MORPHOLOGY

MYELOCYTE

Description:

Cell oval or round shape and smaller than the promyelocyte. Morphologically they can be classified as neutrophilic, eosinophilic and basophilic myelocytes.

Size:

14-20 µm.

Cytoplasm:

Lightly acidophilic and contains characteristic granules for a single species of granulocytes. Coarse azurophilic granules of the promyelocytes in the myelocyte stage replace tender neutrophilic granules, coarse basophilic granules, or dull eosinophilic granules.
Secondary granules of the neutrophilic granulocyte are in the form of rice. They contain alkaline phosphatase, collagenase, lysozyme, aminopeptidase, and acid phosphatase. As the maturation progresses, the cytoplasm loses its basophilic character and becomes slightly acidophilic.

Nucleus:

Oval or slightly indented (kidney shaped), often in an excentric position, with a fine coarse chromatin structure.

Nucleoli

Slightly visible or invisible.
