A large erythrocyte, oval in shape and of volume (MCV) >100 fl. It has an increased thickness, no central sinking, and seems to be hyperchromatic. MCH is increased proportionally to its size, and MCHC is normal.

Significance:
They can be found in the patient with megaloblastic anemia, caused by the deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate.
