Description:

Cell without a nucleus. It is flexible biconcave cell, of a discoid shape, with hemoglobin located on the edges of the cell and a pale central area.

Size:

7-8.5 µm.

Cytoplasm:

Stained red. The stain is darker at the periphery and gradually becomes lighter towards the center because of the biconcavity of the cell. The pale central area is commonly known as the area of the central pallor and occupies between 1/3 and 2/3 of the diameter of a normal erythrocyte. There are no granules. The cells stained with eosine are red and orange-red in panoptic stains (Pappenheim).

Nucleus:

Absent.

Nucleoli

Not visible.
